As a parent it has made me realize over time the power of our words. Our words carry such amazing power that Jacob tricked his twin brother just so his father without knowing could bless him in place of his brother (Genesis 27). A given word not too long ago was the seal of important negotiations. Families would pride themselves in keeping their word because they knew that if they didn't keep their word it would ruin their honor.
Words nowadays are said without any consideration for the weight they carry. When it comes to our children our words (what we speak over them) becomes their future. I say this with a little bit of disappointment in myself because not too long ago I was upset with my son and spoke harshly to him and let me tell you I immediately felt the impact of my words. Words spoken cannot be taken back and they are seeds planted that will produce a fruit.
Recently more than before I lay my hands over my children and I speak blessings into their lives. I tell them how much of a blessing they are, how God will use them in a mighty way, how every day God will use them to show others kindness and the very face of God. They are not mere words but prophesy that will soon come to pass.
I have seen the fruit of blessings I had spoken over them years back come to pass today and this inspires me to bless them even more.
Think before you speak to your child especially during times when you are upset. Learn how to walk away to compose yourself before you speak to your children. You can't take back the wrong choice of words in the past but you have control of your words today. So start prophesying blessings upon their life today.
